HEAT WAVE!!!

Yesterday was the hottest day of my LIFETIME, so far!  The temp hit 106 degrees.  The last time it was this hot on any day of the year was in July, 1954.  Today is close to the same only it is more humid and with a higher  dewpoint.   I mowed the front yard this morning. No weedeating, just mowing. Went out about 8:30 am and finished in about 30 minutes. It was already pretty hot by then. The grass is brown in spots, so probably will not have to mow again until it rains. We are under an excessive heat warning until Sunday and supposed to be triple digits until at least Monday.  The poor A/C unit seems to run all the time, although I raised the thermostat to 82. Most units cannot keep up with this heat. I hear they usually can cool a home between 20 to 25 degrees cooler than outdoor temp.  Good thing I got my new A/C unit a couple of years ago.  Tonight after the sun goes down and it cools down a bit, I will have to water my new tree and other new plantings.  I've even been watering my old trees also as they have been looking a little droopy.

I'm watching NASCAR practice on SPEED right now. It must be unbelievably hot in the cars today. At least the race is at night, so it won't be quite as hot.  Tonight is the Nationwide race and tomorrow night is the Cup race.  Michael Waltrip will be driving the 55 car in the Cup race with a special paint scheme for UK's national championship team.  A lot of other drivers have special red, white and blue paint jobs for the weekend.

GETTING READY FOR THE HEAT!!

We're getting ready for possibly record-breaking heat over the next couple of days.  So, what better than homemade ice cream!  I've been wanting to try out my new ice cream freezer, so I got it out today.  It makes four quarts.  I'll save a couple of bowls for myself and give away the rest.  Here's what it looked like right after it was complete and before I put it in individual bowls into the freezer.

I've also been getting ready for the Fourth of July holiday.  I recently finished decorating  my front porch.  I'll probably leave them up for most of July.   I also have little flags in my flower pots on the porch and that's Uncle Sam on the front door.

SUNDAY MEANS RACING!!

I just got the flowers and tree watered before the NASCAR preshow comes on. They're in California today so the race starts a little later than usual, 2:20 p.m. central time.

It's a good day to get back to piecing a quilt I started in January. I've been busy with teacher gifts and Fourth of July table runners and wall hangings. It's another black and white quilt with a little touch of red. I'm trying to use some of my black and white fabrics since I have a lot. It has two different blocks, a star block and a log cabin block. I'm still making the star blocks. Not sure how many I'll make, just until I get tired of making them, but I do want to get this one finished soon.

Brother is making homemade banana ice cream later, so I will be thinking about that as I sew! YUM!!!

STILETTOS FINISHED!

I finally got my beaded stilettos finished.   I got the idea for them from Bonnie Hunter's blog, Quiltville.  I donated most of them to my Quilt Guild's craft table for our upcoming quilt show!  They were fun to make.  I saved a few to have on hand when I need a gift for an outgoing guild officer or whatever. Here are the pictures.

SPORTS SUNDAY!

Getting ready for NASCAR race at Dover this afternoon .  One of my faves, Mark Martin, got the pole!  He is 53 years old, got his 54th cup pole and drives car #55 (53, 54, 55)!!   Does that sound like karma?  Hmmm... We'll see.  Good luck also to Jr., he wants to win so badly!

This is Dale Jr's car at the Brickyard race (Indy) when we went a few years ago.

Then tonight, St. Louis Cardinals are playing the Sunday night ESPN baseball game.  Maybe national TV audience will bring them some luck! They need it.

Why are all the good shows on Sunday night?  I already had my VCR's busy, but now with the Cards on TV, they'll be working OT.  I love Mad Men on AMC, just two episodes left this season. Also, ABC has new season starting tonight for Secret Millionaire and Extreme Weight Loss.  Lifetime also has season premiere of Drop Dead Diva tonight!  At least I'll have stuff to watch other nights this week when nothing good is on!!
